Teacher of the Year Award - Tackling child obesity
Elaine Wylie, a head teacher from St Ninians Primary School in Stirling, Scotland, initiated the Daily Mile program which involves the entire school, from nursery to P7, running or walking a mile or doing 15 minutes of exercise every day. The program has been going for 3 years now and the school nurse recently reported that there are no pupils in P1 that are over weight which they believe could be related to the pupils doing the Daily Mile since they were in nursery.
Sadly Elaine said that she is retiring this year but already other schools have started with the program so hopefully it continues to spread across the UK and to other shores where tackling child obesity is a concern.
Special Recognition Awared - Millie's Trust
Millie's Trust was created by the parents of Millie Thompson who tragically passed away in a choking incident in October 2012.
Their efforts have led to newly qualified staff with a childcare Level 2 and 3 qualification being required to have an emergeccy first aid or full paediatric first aid certificate and that all ambulances must carry a paediatric first aid kit. They have also set up Millie's Mark which nurseries can display if all their staff are trained in paediatric first aid.
You can read about my experience of attending a 2 day Paediatric first aid course here.
